SHEFFIELD — Sheffield wrestlers grabbed five pins and two major decisions in a 53-18 win over visiting Warren on Friday.
“Our kids were amped up,” said Sheffield coach Tom Holden, whose Wolverines are 9-4 on the season. “This whole group from youth on up pulled together to make this happen. It’s really been a good season. I was proud of the effort of all the kids. They wrestled their hearts out tonight.”
Sheffield started strong (and finished strong), with Collin Brown and Alex Marfink earning first-period pins at 132 and 138 pounds, respectively.
Trenton Mead made it 16-0 Sheffield with a major decision win at 145. Landon Mead’s 21-second pin two matches later gave Sheffield a 22-6 lead.
Holden said Matthew Lobdell earned his third win on the mat this season with a first-period pin at 189.

Sheffield received points its last five matches; Danah Campbell (heavyweight), Bryden Letendre (106), and AJ Barnes (126) getting wins.
Warren’s lone victories on the mat were from pins by Grant Heeter at 152 pounds and Damien Sanchez at 172.
The Dragons are 2-9.
“Plain and simple, we were outwrestled,” said Warren coach Ted Carrington. “Those Wolverines came out for blood, and they got it. We were absolutely out-hustled, outmuscled, and outwrestled.
“Grant Heeter came up big for us at 152,” added Carrington. “Grant knew we needed bonus points and he got them. Damien Sanchez was bumped up to 172 to try and collect those bonus points and he did. It’s always hard bumping kids out of the lineup. We threw in Evan Swanson at 160 to face Landon Mead.”
“Evan has only been wrestling for a month,” Carrington said. “When we explained to (Jason) Stillson that we were going to bump him out, his reply was, ‘It’s OK as long as Evan gets to wrestle varsity.’ Stillson has that team-player attitude we like to see.
“It’s been the same story all year long,” said Carrington. “The wrestling season is not the time to get better, it’s the time to refine and polish. I understand getting beat by bigger city schools. They have a much larger pool to choose from. We just got beat by two county schools that are smaller than our own school. It just goes to show that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog. Our kids are hanging their heads, for sure. They have already decided they want to change things up and work hard for next year.”
