Unbeaten Fairview tops Warren

Times Observer Photo by Jon Sitler Warren’s Kody Vega drives on Fairview’s James Sitter in a 62-46 loss to the unbeaten Tigers on Friday at Warren Area High School.

Fairview showed why it has the only undefeated boys basketball team in District 10 on Friday, leaving Warren with a 62-46 Region 5 win.

Fairview is 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the region. The Dragons are 6-4 and now 3-1 in Region 5.

Warren coach Jeff Berdine said the key was to not get off to a slow start.

That slow start happened quickly in a 16-3 Fairview first quarter.

“We came out and were too timid and not aggressive enough and their defense took us out of running our offense,” said Berdine. “It took us over a quarter to get our sea legs and figure out how much effort it’s going to take.”

While it would be nice for Warren to have history repeat itself, it’s a new season; Fairview has almost everyone back from a successful season in which the Tigers went 11-2 to finish second in Region 5.

While the Tigers routed Warren, 54-31, on the Dragons’ home court last year, Warren turned around and eliminated Fairview from the District 10 playoffs, 46-40.

That’s possibly why the Tigers were so fired up on Friday night.

Senior Logan Frazao scored 6 points, senior Tyler Schultz 4, and senior James Sitter and junior Jeremy Frazao hit 3-pointers in the opening frame.

“I told the kids, ‘You have nothing to hang your heads about, best team in Erie, best team probably in District 10,'” said Berdine. “‘We played them for most of the game to a seven-point game, other than a bad start. The bad start killed us. … You can’t do that against a good team.’ I told them, ‘You have to match their energy early, and you didn’t.’ Once they figured it out, they competed. I told them, ‘You now know you can play with anybody if you give that much effort. You now know what it will take to beat the best team in our region.'”

At 6-foot-5, Sitter came in averaging 14.9 points; he led Fairview with 22, including four 3-pointers. Fairview’s leading scorer on the season, 6-foot-6 Logan Frazao finished with 16 and 6-foot-2 Jeremy Frazao 13.

Warren’s Kody Vega had 7 points and Owen Becker 6 in a 17-16 second quarter. Warren trailed 32-20 at the half.

Brady Berdine and Tommy Nyquist hit 3-pointers in a 13-11 Warren third. Parks Ordiway had 8 points in the fourth, but Fairview pulled away at the free throw line.

Brady Berdine also had 15 points and Braylon Barnes added 10 in a 44-39 junior varsity game win for Warren.
