Stuart, Dragons top McDowell, 2-1
ERIE — Kelsey Stuart scattered five hits and struck out seven in Warren’s 2-1 victory over McDowell on Thursday.
McDowell’s Hilary Sissem reached on an error to start the game and scored the Trojans’ only run.
Stuart started the top of the fourth with a single and, after two outs, Carly Beers and Ellee Irwin had consecutive hits to take the lead, 2-1. Warren (9-2) left runners stranded in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but kept McDowell off the scoreboard.
“Kelsey pitched her best game this season,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart. “She was ahead in the count 95 percent of the game, and we were able to get them to chase and induce easy outs.
“Offensively, we didn’t square it up as much as we should have, but it’s definitely a great win,” she said.
Stuart did not allow any more than one base runner in any inning. She also finished 3-for-3 for the Dragons, which improved to 6-2 in Region 5. McDowell is 5-6 in the region. Irwin added two hits in the win.
Katie Madigan and Beers had three hits each in a 7-5 junior varsity win. Rylie Yeager was the complete-game winner.
