Warren’s Arnold advances to NW AAA semis
Warren's Joey Arnold advanced to the Northwest Region semifinals in the 195-pound weight class.
ALTOONA, Pa. – Warren sophomore Joey Arnold is through to the semifinals at the Northwest PA Class 3A wrestling championships.
Arnold (17-15) earned a pin in just 57 seconds over Altoona’s Josh Keirn, advancing to the quarterfinals at 195, where he met Perry’s Liam Mares. The Dragon earned a 7-2 decision to advance to the semifinals, where he will meet one of the best wrestlers in the state – State College senior Cole Urbas.
Urbas is 31-0, a 2-time state-medalist and committed to the University of Pennsylvania.
The other semifinal match features Cathedral Prep’s Kareem Carson (35-8) against Cranberry’s Brayden Crocker (28-1).
Two other Dragons – Avery Smith and Donovan Fiscus, won their preliminary matches.
Smith was dominant in earning a 12-0 major decision over Cranberry’s Evan Hepler at 120. In the quarterfinals, he squared off with Lane Aikey of Bellefonte, who got the best of Smith via a 17-2 tech fall.
Fiscus, meanwhile got a pin over Brashear’s Asror Nasrittinov in 2:46. In the quarterfinals, he lost via fall to DuBois standout Ed Scott (1:14), who is unbeaten on the season.
All 10 Dragon wrestlers remain alive in the consolation brackets heading into Day 2 today.
