Tough night for county girls basketball teams

Clarion-Limestone used its speed and quickness to open an early lead en rout to a 55-30 win at Youngsville in girls basketball action Wednesday.

The Lady Lions jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter and scored in double figures in each of the first three periods.

“They came out well,” Youngsville coach Andy Sveda said. “They were quick and fast and made some easy buckets. We didn’t defend well to start the game.”

Maddy Craig had a game-high 21 points, while Anna Burns had 12 and Janelle Pezzuti added 10 in the win.

Sadie Hoffman led the Eagles with eight points, Erin Dunn had seven and Kamryn Weissinger six.

Despite the loss, Sveda said he saw improvements in his team’s play.

“We played better than we have been,” he said. “But we missed too many easy shots.”

The Eagles will have a couple days to try to figure things out before they head to Cochranton Saturday for a Region 2 battle with the Cardinals.

“Everybody played better tonight,” Sveda said. “But we still need to improve. We need to focus on getting more fundamentally sound and up our defense a little bit. They’re one of the better teams in our league and will be ready to play.”

ROCKY GROVE 57, TIDIOUTE 25

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Rocky Grove got off to a hot start and never looked back in a 57-25 win over Tidioute on Wednesday.

The Lady Orioles led 20-15 at halftime.

“Turnovers. Bad choices and impulsive decision making,” said Tidioute coach Christy Valentine. “The girls need to drive and put the ball into the basket. We are very young and someone needs to step it up. You can’t win games without making field goals. The girls always play with heart but in order to compete we need to play strong.”

Nakiesha Krouse had 12 points and 5 steals, Kelsey Nuttall with 8 rebounds, while freshman Angelina Sabella, who Valentine noted is improving each and every game, had 5 points.

“Each game we continue to see improvement and will continue to grow as a team,” Valentine said.

JOHNSONBURG 56, SHEFFIELD 17

JOHNSONBURG, Pa. – Cassidy King scored 19 points to lead the unbeaten Johnsonburg girls basketball team to a 56-17 victory over Sheffield on Wednesday.

“We’ve obviously got ourselves some issues to work out on the court, but we’ve got to be about the most selfish bunch right now,” said Sheffield coach Brandon Troutman.

Johnsonburg used a 9-0 run to close the first quarter, and carried that run into the third quarter as they held Sheffield scoreless in the second period.

“If the second period is indicative of our desire or character, we’re going to have a long season,” Troutman explained. “We’ll be back in the gym correcting our issues tomorrow.”

Annabel Sheldon led Sheffield with five points.

Sheffield also fell in the JV game, no score reported.
