Foolish to think Steelers won’t re-sign Bell

By now, you’ve had the chance to digest yet the latest plot twist in the career of Le’Veon Bell, the 24-year old star running back of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Multiple drug tests missed during the 2015 season have resulted in a 4-game suspension in 2016. This comes on the heels of a suspension last season for a DUI which involved marijuana.

It may prove to be a bit problematic for Bell, who is in a contract year and in line for a big payday.

The Steelers won’t re-sign him, though. That’s not the ‘Steeler Way.’ They’re a clean cut organization that holds players to a higher standard than other teams. They’ll dump him the first chance they get.

Don’t believe it for a second.

There is a ‘Steeler Way’ and it has nothing to do with holding players to a high standard and everything to do with winning. Any organization that is worth a darn in the NFL is the same way. It’s laughable to think otherwise.

Bell has made things more difficult than they need to be and for that reason, the Steelers will now have all the leverage in contract negotiations.

Not that it matters that much. They were always going to re-sign Bell.

Quarterbacks aside, he is one of the shining offensive stars in a league that has put a high priority on that side of the ball.

Ben Roethlisberger is now 34 and is playing as well as he has at any point in his career. However many years he has left, the Steelers will make sure that he is surrounded by elite talent at the skill positions. The Le’Veon Bell’s of the world, just like Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown don’t grow on trees, and the Steelers as well as every other team in the league know it.

Don’t get me wrong, Bell has been extremely immature and is being held accountable by the league, as he should.

The fact of the matter is that Bell’s contract will be structured in a way where the Steelers can get out of it should he keep screwing up. You’re paying for the talent and the Steelers will make sure that they won’t be held financially responsible should his recent pattern of behavior continue.

Even without Bell for four games (barring a reduction of the suspension) the Steelers’ offense will still be one of the league’s best.

It will be even better once he returns.

That’s the bottom line and the biggest reason he won’t be going anywhere.

Starting at $3.50/week.
