Warren grad Morrison selected by Twins in MLB Draft
Saturday was a dream come true for Warren native Hank Morrison.
The Mercyhurst University senior was selected in the 22nd round (663rd overall) of Saturday’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Minnesota Twins.
Morrison become the first Warren County player taken in the draft since the Cubs selected Warren pitcher Addison Dunn out of high school in the 45th round in 2009.
The former Dragon standout had a stellar senior campaign for the Lakers, batting .415 with 10 home runs and 53 RBIs to go along with a .486 OBP, .684 slugging percentage and 16 doubles. He was also 14 of 17 in steal attempts.
As a senior at Warren he was named First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region at third base. He is the son of Ted and Amy Morrison.
He played primarily first base for the Lakers as a senior, but the Twins announced him as an outfielder, where he has played previously.
Morrison, a 2012 graduate of Warren Area High School, also made a name for himself in the Coastal Plain League, where he had a slash line of .352/.465/.543 for the Martinsville Mustangs in 2015, ranking among tops in a league that is considered one of the best of its kind in the country and is made up of mostly Division I players.
Once he signs, a likely destination for Morrison will be the Twins rookie league team Elizabethton of the Appalachian League, located in Elizabethton, Tennessee.
Morrison became the second Mercyhurst player taken in the draft, joining teammate and pitcher Colin McKee, who was selected in the 18th round by the Houston Astros.
