College news
For the first time in school history, The Mercyhurst University baseball team – with three Warren grads on the roster and contributing – have advanced to the Divison II College World Series after defeating Millersville, 2-0, on Sunday at Jerry Uht Park in Erie to win the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship.
The Lakers made it there thanks in large part to efforts made from Warren Area High School graduates Hank Morrison, Matt Jaskolka, and Collin Fantaskey.
Jaskolka played a huge role in the win on Sunday. The 2011 graduate of Warren picked up the win for the Lakers, after pitching 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Jaskolka allowed one hit and two walks, while striking out two.
Morrison, who started all five games of the Regional in left field, had a solid tournament as well. The junior had five hits, four walks, and three runs scored throughout the tournament.
Fantaskey saw action in two of the Lakers’ five games, but made a big impact in Sunday’s win. Fantaskey entered as a pinch runner in the seventh inning, and came around to score the second run of the game for the Lakers on a base hit by Cameron Balego.
The Division II College World Series will take place at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The tournament will begin on Saturday, May 23, with the championship being held on the following Saturday the 30th.
Kinzua soccer
On Sunday, the U12 Kinzua Yeager girls soccer team continued their dominate play with a 7-0 victory over visiting Grove City.
Kyra Wotorson used her speed and superior ball control skills to exploit the Grove City defenders in order to lead the team with four goals. Fighting off multiple defenders in the middle of the field, Rylie Yeager was able to score one goal and also pitched in with one assist.
Midway through the second period, Kyleigh Wilson crashed the box and was able to bury a corner kick in the back of the Grove City net. Wilson also added two assists. The highlight of the scoring occurred in the first half when Olivia English crashed the net and was able to tap in a loss ball for her first career Kinzua goal.
Due to a superior defensive effort by Katie Madigan, Leah Peterson and Erin Yunick, the Kinzua goalies, Taylor Napolitan and Maddie Kramer, only had to make four saves to preserve the shutout.
Oldtimers baseball
The Jamestown and Area Old Timers Baseball Club defeated the Warren Eagles, of Warren, Ohio, 6-5, on Sunday. The Old Timers scored first in the third inning with three runs on a bases-loaded double by Wade Nelson. The Old Timers outlasted the Eagles 6-5 over 9 innings. Ed Baldensperger and Sammy Spera aided the win by each hitting 3-for-4 at the plate. Larry Persing also went 2-for-3 for Jamestown. Ron Thomas got the win for the Old Timers with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Bill Shaw threw the last two innings for Jamestown.
The Old Timers next games are a double header against Chester, WV on June 7 at East Liverpool High School in Ohio.

College news
Warren Area High School graduate Nathan Zigler earned an eighth-place finish for Division II Slippery Rock University’s men’s outdoor track and field team in the decathlon – with a score of 5,398 points – at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships earlier this month in East Stroudsburg. The final result was impressive considering Zigler was disqualified from the 110-meter hurdles, his best event, and recorded a score of zero for that discipline. Had he scored his normal tally in that event, his overall finish would have been in the top five.
He ran the 100 in 11.93 seconds, long jumped 6.04 meters, had 10.39 meters in the shot, jumped 1.89 meters in the high jump, ran the 400 in 55.28 seconds, 32.62 meters in the discus, four meters in the pole vault, 50.8 meters in javelin and he ran the 1500 in 4:52.62.
