Our opinion: Right recipe with food trucks
There were two things Warren officials could have done after a local business complained on social media about how the city deals with food trucks – get defensive or see if the business was making a logical point.
We’re glad to see Warren officials took the second route.
In July the owners of the Bucket Brigade Pizza Company posted on Facebook saying they would operate in New York state – a surprising statement given New York’s reputation for being unfriendly to business. The pizza company owners said that in order to operate their food truck in Warren they were told they had to obtain a second business license, even though there is only one company involved.
Randy Rossey, city director of Codes and Planning, said the issue with Bucket Brigade Pizza Company was the impetus for potential rule changes for food trucks. A committee that includes City Council and Planning Commission members has been formed to make recommendations to city staff, who will then draft an ordinance.
As we noted, it would have been easy for Warren officials to dismiss the criticism as sour grapes and move on. It’s more difficult to take a step back, listen to criticism and then react rationally. It will be interesting to see what the new regulations look like, but thus far, in our opinion, city officials are taking a step in the right direction.
