Our opinion: Vandalism is far from child’s play

Recent vandalism in North Warren shows the limits of both a small police department and technology.

On Feb. 12, cameras caught the action as a light pole between the playground on Church Street and the parking lot behind it was deliberately broken as were windows at Warren State Hospital, according to Conewango Township Police.

Three people who police believe to be youths, were seen pushing the light pole back and forth, breaking it and then running away.

The youths were then caught on video behind the state hospital grounds breaking windows. Vandalism has also hit the North Warren Presbyterian Church park and playground in the past as well homes throughout the area and the baseball field at the end of Plumber Street.

Police can’t be everywhere, and those responsible for the vandalism and damage haven’t had their faces captured clearly by video cameras.

Those who live in the area are fed up, and rightly so. It takes time and money to fix this type the damage caused, most likely, by unsupervised teenagers.

There are limits as to what a community should have to put up with, and in this instance things are being broken because someone’s children are breaking them.

That means it’s time for the adults to step up and put an end to this behavior.
