How much traffic will one sign generate?

There’s nothing wrong with the idea of putting some sort of social media landmark somewhere along the water in Warren.

Parks and Recreation Commission members gave a tentative approval for a social media landmark to potentially be located somewhere downtown.

The idea is to give tourists something kitschy to do while they’re downtown by snapping a picture of themselves by the sign and then post the photo on social media. And it’s not a bad idea, but one wonders if city officials are thinking too small here.

Why not have a variety of these signs or other social media drivers located throughout the greater Warren area as part of a coordinated tourism program that involves businesses, museums and other outdoor attractions? How about a weekend program for visitors where they can win a free lunch or be entered in a drawing to win something from a downtown business if they get their picture taken in front of all of them? Strategically locating the items and proper marketing of the sites is likely to have more impact than one sign will.

In our opinion, having one sign is a fine idea, but how much traffic is it really going to generate? Its impact is limited by its scope. If such a program is going to get people talking, it must be bigger.

Starting at $4.00/week.
