Our opinion: New city chief is a good fit

Joe Sproveri, at left, has excelled in almost every position the Warren Police Department has to offer. The new chief has worked as a patrol officer, patrol supervisor, as a patrol sergeant and captain over the last 14 years.

We are confident he will excel as Warren’s police chief as well.

Sproveri’s understanding of Warren and the needs of its police officers should serve him well as he becomes responsible for making staffing decisions, managing the department’s budget and working with the city’s elected officials to make sure the Warren Police Department has the resources it needs and making sure the department continues to meet its accreditation standards.

Accreditation isn’t often talked about, but the accreditation process helps ensure a police department has the policies and procedures — and is following those policies and procedures appropriately — so that officers are truly serving the public. Sproveri takes the department’s accreditation seriously, as he should.

Ray Zydonik and Brandon Deppen, Warren’s last two police chiefs, left big shoes to fill. Sproveri appears more than capable of filling them.
