Our Opinion: Time to be smart

Last week, we ran an editorial supporting a Republican bill that passed the House and Senate.

The bill would have loosened Wolf’s control of non-essential and essential businesses in Pennsylvania and required him to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

It was vetoed.

The Republicans in Pennsylvania do not have the votes to overturn the governor’s veto.

We are all for the loosening of what is and is not an essential business in Pennsylvania.

As long as CDC guidelines are followed, masks and gloves are used, and social distancing is observed, we feel that getting a haircut is now appropriate. Actually, we feel it is much safer than going to a big-box store to go grocery shopping.

Even with the order in place to wear a mask to go grocery shopping, we feel there are a lot of activities much safer than big-box store shopping right now.

But grocery shopping is essential. So there has to be a happy medium, right? Hopefully, we will advance to a place in reaching that happy medium.

But, we beg you, do not gather to protest.

These mass protests are just a breeding ground for COVID-19. If one person has it without symptoms, the entire crowd is exposed.

Every person that comes into contact with someone in that crowd after the protest is exposed. This is just not a time to protest in large groups. There are other ways to protest that can be done safely.

Protest in writing: To us, to your legislator, to Governor Wolf.
