Our Opinion: Bravo, school board

Here we go again, will the athletic tail wag the academic dog?

On Monday night, the Warren County School District’s board of directors voted unanimously to allow students who spend the majority of their school day at a school in order to take a class or classes not available at their home school to participate in sports at the school that they’re taking the majority of their classes.

Bravo to the school district. This is absolutely the right decision.

Of course, we’re fans of open enrollment in the Warren County School District, but we won’t broach that subject here.

Here’s where things get sticky:

What this means, more students who live outside of the central attendance area will likely become students in the central attendance area.

Why?

Because the central attendance area hosts a majority of the population, so it is easier to populate AP classes at your biggest school.

You simply can’t offer an AP class at a school if there are only five or fewer students interested.

The school district simply does not have the resources to do that, so they allow students to attend a different school that is offering that class.

Which is likely going to be in Warren — the largest attendance area.

In reality, this is only going to affect a handful of kids, less than 20.

But it’s the right decision.

The education of the student should come first, second and third in this matter. Where the young male or female plays sports, should not matter.

But this is Warren County, and the world we live in, so it will matter.

‘This only benefits Warren,’ and whatever other tired drums will be beaten to death, AGAIN.

The next school board committee meetings will likely be visited by more than three people.

So to save everyone a headache, let the dog wag the tail this time.

We offer two simple solutions:

1. If you don’t want your student attending Warren, have him/her take a majority of their credits at their home school;

2. Or, unless it affects your kid directly, mind your own damn business.

This isn’t about Warren versus the outlying area. We don’t care where a student plays his or her athletics.

We only care about that student receiving the best education possible.

That is and should be the primary goal of the Warren County School District.

So, to the board of directors, who so boldly voted unanimously on Monday night…

Thank you.

You wag that tail!
