David Swanson
Dear Editor,
I want to, but was unable to attend the tribute to the late David Swanson, which was held at the Warren County Courthouse on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015.
I, too, have memories of David Swanson being from the same hometown, Ludlow, Pa. The people in Ludlow were very proud that a young man from a small town was a student at Yale Law School… a very prestigious school. I knew his parents Ernest and Dorothy Swanson, who owned a small grocery store in Ludlow named Swanson and Co. I worked there during my senior year in high school. His Grandmother Olson was a neighbor of ours and his sisters, Margaret and Kathy, and cousins, grew up in Ludlow.
During summer months when he was home from colleges, he would drive the store’s truck, delivering groceries all around and he would allow “us kids” to ride in the back of the truck. In “those days,” you called the store to place an order and the groceries were delivered to your home. When I worked in the store, I would take orders over the telephone and once David said to me, “When customers order cucumbers, don’t write it all out… write ‘cukes.'” To this day, when I am making out my grocery list, and plan to buy cucumbers, I write “cukes.”
