Registration opens for statewide Firefighter Credentialing Program

The Pennsylvania Municipal League and the Pennsylvania Career Fire Chiefs Association are announcing a new program for firefighters across the state. The PA Fire Credentialing Program offers a new credentialing program open to all firefighters in Pennsylvania, including volunteer firefighters. This program allows for a universally accepted set of skills and standards that can transfer from city to city in Pennsylvania. This program is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania and registration opens Wednesday.

The program creates a standardized credential for participants that they can carry with them and transfer from department to department. It provides a standardized, objective benchmark that can help fire departments make informed hiring decisions to ensure that candidates meet the essential qualifications. The credential also signifies that a participant is willing to commit to a standard of excellence, accountability, and ongoing professional development.

“Pursuing the Pennsylvania Fire Service Credentialing Program isn’t just about meeting standards, it’s about pushing yourself to grow, lead, and serve at a higher level. It builds the confidence that comes from knowing you’ve earned your place, and the credibility to lead others with skill and integrity.” Chief Scott Little, Vice President, PA Career Fire Chiefs Association.

The credentialing program is a partnership between the Career Fire Chiefs Association and The Pennsylvania Municipal League. As a part of its work with municipalities across the state, The League offers training opportunities designed to fit the special requirements and considerations of communities and local governments.

“This common sense, education, training, certification and experiential learning initiative will allow fire service leaders the opportunity to learn and grow in their roles, serving their local department and their community. Management, team building and interpersonal skills are more important now than ever before for fire service leaders to lead successfully. That’s why this credentialing program is open to all fire service officers including volunteer, career, full time or part time. The League brings a wealth of experience in helping to train local officials. Dedicated staff will support and assist the Career Fire Chiefs in administering this leadership continuum.” John Brenner, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Municipal League.

The program offers two certification levels. Experienced firefighters can get credit for training and work they’ve already accomplished. The program focuses on building leadership and professional standards encourages experienced firefighters to become mentors who guide others through a shared path of professional development and improvement.

Registration is open through the fire credentialing program website, www.pafirecredentialing.org. The site will be password protected until the opening registration date of November 5th.
