Volunteer Fire Dept, honors firefighter Ronald Johnson’s 50 years of service

Ronald Johnson has reached a milestone in his pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services career.

For 50 years, Johnson has faithfully responded to ambulance calls, offering help to those in need during their most critical moments and is still doing so at 75 years old. Johnson is the longest active EMT in Warren County.

Johnson began his journey with the Scandia Volunteer Fire Department in January 1968 and has since served 58 years as an active firefighter, making him the longest-serving member to date. When Warren County first introduced an EMT course, Johnson was among the very first to enroll and pass through the PA Department of Health, setting the stage for a lifetime of dedication to emergency care.

As the county expanded its EMS capabilities and launched its paramedic program, Johnson once again stepped forward. He was among the first to be certified and used the opportunity to deepen his pre-hospital medical knowledge. Not content with merely earning certifications, he became a mentor and role model for younger EMTs and first responders, encouraging growth and excellence within the ranks of Warren County’s emergency services.

Early in the program’s development, paramedics were not permitted by Warren General Hospital to take medical command. Many volunteers left, discouraged, or chose different roles. But Johnson stayed the course, often taking the complete EMT and paramedic programs more than once. With time and perseverance, full paramedic services were finally realized in the county.

Balancing two- to eight-hour shifts at Warren General Hospital with full-time jobs and family responsibilities, Johnson exemplified the heart of volunteer service. He was there at a pivotal moment–just days after the paramedic program launched–when he became the first paramedic in Warren County to save a life using a defibrillator. The life he saved belonged to a 21-year-old man from Sugar Grove.

Ronald Johnson’s service has always been driven by compassion, commitment, and a deep desire to ease pain and suffering. His efforts have impacted hundreds of lives in the last five decades. A selfless, caring man, Johnson has never sought recognition. His EMS career has been a volunteer labor of love–a gift to his community born out of purpose and kindness.

“We need to honor people who have given so much to their communities and beyond as Volunteers. Those of us who have served with him, in Scandia VFD think he’s an amazing volunteer.” said his wife Sharon Johnson.
