Route 426 bridge to be replaced later this month
An 89-year-old bridge over a branch of the Brokenstraw Creek on Rt. 26 in Spring Creek Township is set to be replaced later this month.
Replacement of the 19-foot bridge is expected to start on Sept. 16. The bridge is located about 4.5 miles north of the intersection with Rt. 27.
“The project will include removal of the existing structure and replacing it with a precast concrete box culvert,” PennDOT said in a statement. “Work will also include minor paving of the roadway leading up to the bridge as well as an updated guiderail.”
The work will require a 21.8 mile detour, using Rt. 27 and US 6.
“It is expected to be in place for two weeks,” PennDOT said of the detour. “The new bridge is expected to be opened by September 30, 2024, weather permitting.”
The current bridge was built in 1935 and is classified by PennDOT as in “poor condition.”
About 900 vehicles each day use the bridge.
The work will be completed by Chivers Construction Company, Inc. of Fairview, Pa. while the total cost is just over $725,000.
