A circulating scam impersonates county sheriff’s deputies

Times Observer photo by Josh Cotton Warren County Sheriff Scott Neiswonger is highlighting a scam that sees the scammer impersonate a county sheriff’s deputy and demand funds.

A scam is making the rounds involving the impersonation of a Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy who will ask for fines from people that allegedly have warrants.

“We have received several calls… that an unknown male has called several people that live in Warren County in attempts to scam them,” Sheriff Scott Neiswonger said. “This male is identifying himself as a deputy from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.”

Neiswonger explained that the scammer is telling people that they have warrants and that they need to send him money to allow for their fines to be paid off.

“I wanted to advise citizens in the community of this scam, and that the Warren County Sheriff’s Office does not ask for money to be sent over the phone or to any cash app,” he said.

He detailed the specifics of one of the calls.

“I just had a lady come in and they asked her to send money in bitcoin due to her missing jury duty,” Neiswonger said.

Deputies will at times use the phone or leave business cards in doors as they try to make contact with people.

“Once contact is made, the deputies will show up in person, in full uniform and driving a Warren County Sheriff’s vehicle or will have people come into the courthouse,” Neiwsonger stressed.

“Be aware of any suspicious phone calls or requests over the phone.”

Anyone who receives such a call is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (814) 723-7553.

Starting at $3.50/week.
