Thompson addresses assassination inquiry
It feels like it’s been much more than three weeks since the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler.
Since then, President Joe Biden has dropped out of the race for the White House, drastically altering the scope of the contest; J.D. Vance was selected as the GOP nominee for vice president and the Republican National Convention was held.
But that hasn’t shifted the need for what happened in Butler to be fully understood and investigated.
And Congressman Glenn Thompson supports those efforts undertaken in the House of Representatives as well as the resignation of the director of the Secret Service.
He addressed the issue in a recent newsletter, highlighting the legislation that established a task force to investigate the incident.
“The Secret Service is trusted with the vital role of guarding our nation’s past, present, and future heads of state,” Thompson said. “When protecting such significant assets, the Secret Service simply cannot fail.
“This task force will examine the actions of any agency, department, officer, or employee at every level of government related to the events that took place in Butler, Pennsylvania, and it will offer recommendations to ensure procedures are in place to prevent a situation like this from ever happening again.”
He was also critical of the testimony offered by then-Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who resigned last week.
“During her testimony with the House Oversight Committee, Director Cheatle consistently failed to answer simple questions about her agency’s failures to properly protect and secure the rally site in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Thompson said. “Her failure resulted in the death of veteran, former fire chief, and American hero Corey Comperatore.
“Director Cheatle’s resignation was necessary; the failures that occurred under her watch cannot happen again.”
