Man sentenced for assault in his own family

A man was sentenced in Warren County Court on Friday on assault charges for an incident against his own family.

Brent A. Haehn, 46, will spend at least nearly three years in state prison as a result of a sentence handed down by Judge Gregory Hammond on Friday morning on charges of terroristic threats and two counts of simple assault.

Assistant Public Defender Francis Waweru said that his client has a long history of drug use and has mental health issues.

He said that Haehn was not taking his medications and was using fentanyl and methamphetamine when the incident occurred last June.

Assistant District Attorney Casey Strickland said that Hahn “absolutely terrorized” his family.

She said that Haehn assaulted his mother, called her names and threatened to kill her. Haehn’s two daughters then took their grandmother to a room upstairs and barricaded themselves in a room.

“He (Haden) went up with an aluminum bat,” Strickland said.

She told the court that Haehn was sentenced to state prison in 2018 for another assault of his mother.

“(There is) absolutely no reason to show leniency,” Strickland said, stating that she has “never seen people more afraid of someone” than the victims in this case.

“I apologize for what I’ve done,” Haehn said. “I didn’t mean to go that far. I overacted totally. It’s all my fault.”

He said he wasn’t going to hurt anyone.

Hammond disagreed with that notion.

First, he said that Haehn received a misconduct in the county jail for tying bedsheets together.

He added that the victim’s statement is “beyond heartbreaking.”

“This isn’t the first time you victimized your mother,” Hammond said. “Please don’t stand here today” and say you didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

He said the “thing that infuriates me the most” is that his mother paid his fines from the 2018 incident.

“Gratitude, I guess, is getting the aluminum bat out,” he said. “Your mother has lived in fear for long enough.”

Haehn was sentenced to a total of 39 to 78 months incarceration in state prisons with credit for 132 days time served on charges of terroristic threats and two counts of simple assault.

He was also ordered to pay $65 in restitution, $375 in fees, a no contact and no trespass order with four victims, submission of a DNA sample and both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and compliance with recommendations.
