Drug, sex offenses land Warren man in state prison

Drug and sex charges have landed a Warren man in state prison and a lifetime registrant as a sex offender.

Mitchell Bryant, 24, was sentenced Friday by President Judge Maureen Skerda.

“This is a difficult case,” Henry Borger, his attorney on one of the cases, said. “He is such a bright young man. He’s always been honest. He accepts responsibility here.”

His counsel on a second case, Chief Public Defender Kord Kinney, said that he thinks the offenses are the “culmination of addiction.”

Bryant told the court that he takes responsibility and accountability, apologized for his conduct and thanked his lawyers.

Skerda said that she considered his age but said the “offenses require state time.

“You are well spoken. You’re bright,” she said. “Addiction has destroyed many bright people. Being honest with yourself is where recovery begins.”

According to City of Warren Police, Bryant and a 15-year-old female were found unconscious in a vehicle at a fuel station in the city in December.

As she was removed from the vehicle to be transported to Warren General Hospital for treatment, the girl was found to have no clothes on from the waist down, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

She said they both used what she believed to be cocaine in the vehicle, according to the affidavit, and didn’t remember anything, including undressing, after the vehicle turned onto Pennsylvania Avenue, according to the affidavit.

A sexual assault kit was taken and eventually brought back a DNA match for Bryant, according to the affidavit.

The drug charges stem from two incidents in 2021 when Bryant sold two grams of cocaine to a confidential informant.

He was sentenced to eight to 16 months incarceration, $1,925 in fines and fees and submission of a DNA sample on a count of criminal use of a communications facility as well as 12 to 24 months incarceration and $100 in fees on a count of possession with intent to deliver.

He was also sentenced to 54 to 108 months to be served concurrently along with $925 in fines and fees, three years probation and a no contact order with the victim or victim’s family on a count of sexual assault.

The sentences included a Tier III lifetime Megan’s Law sexual offender registration.

Bryand had also pleaded guilty to charges of statutory sexual assault and indecent assault but Skerda said that those offenses were subsumed into the sexual assault charge and no further penalty was ordered.
