School district sets math, ELA improvement goals

The Warren County School District board has approved comprehensive plans through 2026.

The board approved plans for the district and the Warren County Career Center during a recent special meetings. The plans establish priorities and act as guide for implementation of programs and policies for the district. They are required to be regularly submitted by the state Department of Education.

The plans will now be advertised for a 28-day comment period. If no comments requiring changes are made, the plan will be submitted to the Department of Education. The plans must be submitted to the department by Oct. 1.

TITLE 1 PLANS

Schoolwide Title I plans for Eisenhower, Sheffield, Warren and Youngsville elementary schools were approved. Title I provides federal funds targeting students at an educational disadvantage due to poverty. In schools with an impoverished student population of 40% or more, funding can be used for general programs. Schools under the 40% threshold must use money for programs targeted at impoverished students. The plans needed to be approved and submitted to the state Department of Education by Sept. 1.

Sheffield’s plan includes goasl to increase third- through fifth-grade ELA proficiency by 8% from 2021-22 through the end of the 2023-24 school year, with Title 1 money to be used for additional classroom literacy supplies as the district implements a newly adopted Core Knowledge Language Arts literacy suite; to pay two reading specialists and paraprofessionals.

The district has also set a goal of an 8% improvement in third- through fifth-grade math scores by the end of the 2023-24 school year, with Title 1 money being used for math manipulatives, games, cards and resources parents can use at home to support math learning.

Eisenhower Elementary School has set a goal of improving third- through fifth-grade ELA proficiency by 6% by the end of the 2023-24 school year, with plans to use Title 1 money on additional classroom literacy supplies and the salaries of a reading specialist and one paraprofessional. The school also wants to improve third- through fifth-grade math scores by 6% and will use Title 1 funding to for math manipulatives, games, cards and resources parents can use at home to support math learning.

The goal for Youngsville Elementary School is an 8% improvement in third- through fifth-grade ELA and math proficiency by 8% from 2021-22 through the end of the 2023-24 school year. Money will be spent on classroom literacy supplies, the salaries of one reading specialist and five paraprofessionals and math manipulatives, games, cards and resources parents can use at home to support math learning.

The Warren Area Elementary Center has goals of 8% increases in ELA and math proficiency by the end of the school year, with Title 1 money to be used on classroom literacy supplies, the salaries of six reading specialists and five paraprofessionals, the salary of one math specialist and math manipulatives, games, cards and resources parents can use at home to support math learning.

OTHER BUSINESS

Application for a grant from the Cummins Foundation to be used toward the purchase of a wet blast cabinet for the Warren County Career Center’s power equipment technology program was approved. The foundation provides grant of $5,000 or greater. The estimated cost of the wet blast cabinet is $12,513.59.

Final graduate lists were presented to the board. It was announced that an additional student had been added to the list following summer school programs.

It was also announced that the district’s annual audit had begun.
