Community Foundation scholarships top $1M
The Community Foundation of Warren County has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships for the 2023-24 school year.
“The Community Foundation oversees over 43 scholarship funds providing aid to local students,” Executive Director Robert Kaemmerer said.
There were 137 scholarships awarded to 74 graduating seniors in amounts from $250 to $10,000.
Those added up to more than $430,000.
“Many of the scholarship awards renew if the student meets certain requirements such as their grade point average,” Kaemmerer said. “In addition to the new awards, the foundation awarded over $646,000 for renewing scholarships, bringing the total amount of scholarships awarded through the Community Foundation for the upcoming school year to over $1,076,000.”
“The various scholarships awarded through the foundation support a number of career fields, including degrees for educational, nursing, medical, and vocational career majors,” he said. “They also recognize high school achievements in sports and proficiencies in scholastics.”
Kaemmerer suggested that future graduates look into the Pennsylvania PATH program to help stretch their scholarship dollars.
“Often overlooked in the value of scholarships provided from the Community Foundation are matching funds from the Pennsylvania PATH program,” he said. “This program requires that a student be enrolled as an undergraduate, at least half-time, in a PA state grant-approved postsecondary institution in Pennsylvania and maintain satisfactory academic progress.”
“PATH matches up to $3,500 of funds received from qualified community foundations,” he said. “Community Foundation scholarship recipients received over $350,000 in PATH aid last academic year.”
“The portal for scholarships opens in January every year and closes in mid-April,” Kaemmerer said. “Students apply on-line by logging into the Community Foundation website, www.cfwc.org and clicking on the ‘scholarship’ tab.”
“Besides the existing scholarship funds, there will be at least three new scholarships available for students in 2024, including the first scholarship in support of careers in the culinary arts — the Blake Landon Corey Memorial Scholarship.”
