Turnout low during voting early Tuesday

There have been some very busy Election Days in Warren County in the past few years.

Tuesday was not one of those.

Turnout was reportedly low, but a low turnout is not surprising for a municipal primary.

At the Salvation Army in Warren, which houses the Warren West and Warren South precincts, there had been a total of 100 voters through by 12:52 p.m. – 74 of those from Warren West and 26 from Warren South.

Dave Zock was the 101st to cast a ballot there. He was in and out in a few minutes and there were no other voters inside through that whole time. He described the process as “easy.”

“All the precincts were up and running at 7 a.m.,” Director of Elections Krystle Ransom said. “No problems. No equipment failures.”

About 900 mail-in ballots were returned out of almost 1,200 sent out. That is a far cry from the 7,000 sent out in 2020, according to Board of Elections Chairman Ben Kafferlin.

Only two teams of pre-canvassers were at work in the courthouse checking and opening mail-in ballots.

The teams were made up of one registered Democrat and one registered Republican.

They had identified 26 potentially problematic ballots by noon.

Of those nine were not dated, three had invalid dates, three envelopes did not have signatures, there were eight “naked” ballots – the ballots were not enclosed in the security envelopes, and there were a few other situations, according to Warren County Solicitor Nathaniel Schmidt. The board of elections will examine and make rulings on those questionable ballots during adjudication on Friday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
