The Warren County Chess Club got off to a good opening.

A local group of chess enthusiasts gathered for the first time Wednesday evening, holding an informational meeting and playing games at the Arbor House in Warren.

“I think there are a lot of closet chess fans out there,” Organizer Nathaniel Schmidt said. “Chess teaches a lot of really important values. I think it’s great to have around.”

There were 15 people in attendance at the beginning and a total of 18.

The group did not hold a formal organizational meeting with the election of officers.

Those in attendance were surveyed about their hopes for the organization.

Some players were looking for recreational play. Others expressed an interest in competitions and chess instruction.

“I think there’s a real possibility that the club fills that whole spectrum,” Schmidt said.

The group welcomes players of all skill levels and will meet again at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the Arbor House.

Starting at $3.50/week.
