Child pornography case moves forward
A Corry man facing numerous child pornography charges was in court Thursday.
Mason T. Swanson, 32, is charged with 20 counts of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility.
According to Judge Gregory Hammond, Swanson filed motions on his own, without the assistance of counsel.
The first, a request for bail reduction, Hammond said the request as filed by Swanson was null because it should have been filed by his attorney. “Mr. Swanson is represented by legal counsel,” he said.
Swanson’s bail is set at $100,000.
The second regarded his attorney, and there are circumstances under which a defendant may be granted different counsel.
Hammond said Swanson wrote that his attorney had been dismissed as of March 2.
“You don’t have the authority to dismiss your court-appointed counsel,” Hammond said. “I’m treating that as a pro se motion for appointment of a new attorney.”
He asked Swanson what substantial reason he had for the request.
“I’m no longer requesting that,” Swanson said.
“We’re ready to go forward,” his attorney, Warren County Public Defender Kord Kinney, said.
Swanson is set this month for both a settlement conference, and, if necessary, calendar call to schedule a trial.
