Borough, chief address increased police activity
For some, there is a point at which people can do their jobs too well.
While some in the community are saying that about the Youngsville Borough Police Department, the chief and borough council see it as doing the job appropriately.
At Monday’s meeting of Borough Council, Chief Todd Mineweaser said he had received complaints that there has been increased police activity in the borough — especially traffic stops. He admitted that there has been increased activity.
“We have been doing a lot more traffic stops,” Mineweaser said.
But, the department is not giving out more tickets.
Of the 61 traffic stops in March, only 19 resulted in a citation, he said. There were 21 verbal warnings given, and 21 other stops resulted in no action. “It’s not targeting at all. Look at the DUI arrests — 0,” he said. “The word’s out. Plan ahead.”
Council members have also heard rumblings. Rick Brewster said he’d heard there were five borough police vehicles at one stop.
“We do not have five police vehicles,” he said.
There was a state police presence in the borough during enforcement related to St. Patrick’s Day, Mineweaser said.
“We’re not trying to pad our budgets with traffic tickets,” Troy Clawson said.
Mineweaser said the borough brings in less than $2 more for a traffic ticket than a parking ticket. He said he was pleased that people have noticed the additional activity.
“It’s a deterrent,” he said. “We’re being seen. We’re deterring criminals from wanting to settle here. “There are a lot of drugs going on in the area lately. We’re trying to keep them out of Youngsville.”
“I want my community to be safe,” Clawson said. “Do I want them to be out there arresting everybody? No. But that’s not what’s happening.”
“So far, the complaints I’ve received, I haven’t had anything that our guys were doing anything wrong,” Mineweaser said. “Were they professional? Yes. Were they doing something wrong? No.”
He said he is able to check body camera footage if there is an allegation that an officer acts improperly.
