Warren continues perfect start to tennis season
ERIE — Playing its seventh consecutive road match to start the season, the Warren boys tennis team continued its strong run with a 5-0 win over Mercyhurst Prep.
It’s been an unusual start to the year, as the Dragons have yet to play on their home courts through seven weeks. Despite that, the team has handled the challenge well, opening the season with an impressive winning streak away from home.
Lucas Thrift, Gabe Dougherty and Jaxon Thrift won singles matches for the Dragons.
Gaven Mealy and Karson McCollough were winners at first doubles while Bill Bennett and Tobiah Reinard won at second doubles.
Josh Westover, Trey Carrington, Bentley Sherry and Luc Wilkins were winners in jayvee play.
“The boys had to make a lot of adjustments with the wind today, and there were definitely some ups and downs, but the guys stuck together and did what they needed to do to come away with some wins,” Dragons coach Thomas Pellegrino said. “Jaxon Thrift at third singles and our first doubles team of Gaven Mealy and Karson McCollough really set the tone for us grabbing some decisive wins early in the match giving us a quick 2-0 lead.”
The Dragons will finally have an opportunity to play at home this afternoon at 4 p.m. when they will take on the Elk County Catholic Crusaders at Betts Park.
The Dragons are now 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 2 play.
