Parks panel hears disc golf location ideas

Multiple individuals in the last several years have approached the city about bringing disc golf to a city park.

One location appears to have been ruled out but another is on the table.

Parks, Recreation and Landscape Committee member Mike Suppa told the board this week that a meeting was held with someone who expressed interest in bringing the sport here.

“We’ve had three or four different people come to Parks & Rec over the last five to six years and present on disc golf,” Suppa said.

A meeting was held recently “to discuss different places and possibilities,” Suppa added. “(We) have ruled out Betts Park as a location or at least one we want to pursue at this point in time.”

The current proposed location is Mulberry Park on the city’s north side, possibly up into school district property in Glade Township.

Suppa acknowledged that it would require engagement with the school district and Glade Township officials.

City Manager Mike Holtz said he heard from the Warren County School District and the recommendation was to attend a school board committee meeting to discuss the proposal.

Suppa said there are “two trains of thought” with the proposal — put the course on school district property or start it at Mulberry and go up to the school district’s property.

The combined proposal “would have both kinds of disc golf in one location” — both wide-open and wooded space. “(There) might be some benefit in attracting folks using it by having both scenarios.”
