City locks in road improvement projects

Bids are locked in for a rebuild of South Irvine Street set for this year.

City Engineer Darren Pike said bids were opened last week for the project and Lakeshore Paving was the sole bidder. It’s a federal Community Development Block Grant project and Pike said it’s funded by allocations under the program from 2020 and 2021.

The base bid approved by city council on Monday totals $404,800. It can take allocations from multiple years to secure sufficient funds to complete these projects so city staff is already planning what’s next.

Pike said the 2022 allocation has been assigned for a similar rebuild of Glenwood St. Resident income levels impact where this funding can be used.

“The city has qualified Glenwood Street,” City Manager Mike Holtz said. “We’re excited about that.”

Council also approved on Monday an agreement that will bring over $1 million in road funds into the city as part of the Federal Local Aid Route program.

Pike explained that funding would include $295,770 to repave Crescent Park from the Veterans Memorial Bridge to the city line; $510,719 to repave Lexington Avenue from Parker Street to South Irvine Street as well as $469,228 to rehabilitate Madison Avenue from Malvina Street to Park AVenue.

He noted the funding for Lexington Avenue is only about half of the amount needed to complete the project so work will “begin at Parker Street and go as far west as funding allows.”

Holtz said that this work is likely to be completed in 2024.
