Roundabout, US 6, Route 62 highlight 2023 projects
Times Observer photo by Josh Cotton A $6.8 million road resurfacing project on US 6 starts here, at Main Ave., and is planned to run to Yankee Bush Rd. in Starbrick. Bids are projected to be opened in May with the work to wrap up in 2024.
Roadwork in 2023 is likely to be highlighted by the roundabout at the intersection of Market Street and Pennsylvania Avenue but several other sizable projects are planned for major roadways in the county.
The roundabout — construction is set to begin in April — is one of several projects considered “under construction” according to PennDOT’s PA Projects website.
Estimated cost for that project is $3,982,690.
Other notable projects still categorized this way is the project that saw a resurface of US 6 by the Glade Bridge and Route 59, bridge over Telic Run on Route 27. and work on Matthews Run Road between Youngsville and Jackson Run Road.
The list of what is detailed as “anticipated” construction for 2023 includes sizable resurfacing projects on both US 6 and Route 62.
The stretch of 62 from Hatch Run Road to the New York State Line is part of a $4.95 million resurfacing project. Bids are to be opened by Jan. 26 with the work completed by the end of 2023.
Moving south on 62, a $1.6 million resurfacing project is on tap for the stretch of road south of the US 6 interchange. That work is planned to be completed by May 31, 2024 and includes an additional $1 million in work to the bridge over Lenhart Run.
Weight restrictions were placed on that bridge back in 2021, forcing vehicles over the limit to use alternate routes including US 6 and routes 27 and 36.
The bridge dates to 1928 and is classified as in poor condition. PennDOT says about 1,000 vehicles use the bridge daily.
A $6.8 million restoration project will cover Main Avenue in Warren to Yankee Bush Road in Starbrick along US 6. The projected completion date for that work is July 2024.
Along with that will come $2.4 million in bridge rehabilitation to the bridges along that stretch, including the smart bridge as well as the bridge over the Allegheny River near Betts Park.
Irvine and Youngsville will also see significant resurfacing.
A string of projects will include National Forge Road to East Main Street in Youngsvile as well as North Main Street to the borough limit, West Main Street to US 6 and US 6 from west of W. Main St. to just past Railroad Street.
Totaling over $5 million, that work is projected to be complete by the end of this year.
An additional $803,500 is set aside for bridge preservation work in Route 426, Old Route 77, Bear Lake, US 6 in Tiona and at the Rt. 62/US 6 interchange.
