Commissioners approve Center St. project

The Warren County Commissioners have taken action to allocate federal entitlement funding to a street reconstruction project in Clarendon.

County Grants Administrator Danielle Flasher said during a public hearing prior to Wednesday’s commissioners meeting that the “intended project” for federal fiscal year 2022 funds is the reconstruction of Center St.

Flasher said the 2021 funding was for stormwater improvements on that same street and the goal is to complete both in the same construction season.

“Clarendon Borough felt a complete (reconstruction) was necessary,” she added.

The commissioners subsequently approved that proposal later in the meeting.

The commissioners also heard that many county positions have recently been filled.

“It’s wonderful to see a lot of new hires” with few leaving, Commissioner Tricia Durbin said, hoping that this marks “turning the corner” from staffing issues.

Commissioner Ben Kafferlin told the rest of the board that he is working with the Northwest Commission and Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry separately to perform what he called an “economic development gap analysis.”

He explained that the analysis for each group would be “looking at things like micro-lending, wrap-around services and different models of business incubation” to “see what we ought to be preparing for” with the coming of the gig economy.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, gig workers “are independent contractors or freelancers who typically do short-term work for multiple clients. The work may be project-based, hourly or part-time, and can either be an ongoing contract or a temporary position.”

“I don’t have a crystal ball,” he said, asking the other commissioners to provide any feedback for the planning process.

Starting at $3.50/week.
