Crime Stoppers talks restructure

Bringing back an organization that had gone largely dormant can take time.

The Warren County Crime Stoppers board met Friday to continue those efforts.

The board met for the first time in a couple years back in August and hoped to use the Warren County Fair as a boost to that effort.

Several applications to join the board were received during Fair Week and a lot of questions were asked about the status of the Steer Dump, a key Crime Stoppers fundraiser.

Acting President Gary Barnes said there is an intent to bring that event back in 2023.

District Attorney Rob Greene said, at this stage, the board needs to be formed “to take charge” of the organization. “(It’s) really important to get structure.”

He said the board has to be non-law enforcement.

“We can’t do it,” Greene said. “It needs to be separate.”

He said it’s his view that there is a “solid foundation” in place, though.

The tipline went live a couple months ago and one tip was received since that time.

Warren County Crime Stoppers as an organization dates back to the 1970s. At the heart of their operation is an anonymous tip line — 1-800-83-CRIME — and the prospect of rewards for information that substantially advances law enforcement investigations.
