Time is running out for Warren County property owners who are in arrears on their property taxes by two years and would like to avoid seeing their names in print.

At Monday’s work session of the Warren County Commissioners, Tax Claim Bureau Director Phil Gilbert issued a reminder. The tax claim bureau staff will be preparing an ad to be placed in the Times Observer in early July.

“We have two weeks left until the big newspaper ad,” Gilbert said. “The last day to pay would be June 30 to avoid that ad. Otherwise, come July 1, it will be printed.”

That ad will include all of the properties that are two years in arrears.

Not all of those properties will be available at the Sept. 26 sale. Payments are accepted into September, Gilbert said. “The last day to pay is Sept. 23. The last day for personal checks is Sept. 9.”

At the upset sale, buyers are responsible for past-due taxes, liens, and mortgages.

Properties that continue to have past due taxes after that sale are subject to the county’s judicial sale. At that sale, properties are sold free and clear of mortgages, taxes, and liens and the minimum bids reflect the costs the county has incurred related to the properties.

During the meeting, Gilbert informed the commissioners that he may soon be promoted in the state-wide Tax Claim Bureau Association.

“The director for Franklin County is resigning,” he said. “She is the president of the Tax Claim Bureau Association. I was vice president.”
