Officials talk state fire report

First steps have been taken in response to a report that projects the future of county fire service.

County and municipal officials are discussing the report from a peer consultant through the Governor’s Center for Local Government Services.

Public Safety Director Ken McCorrison said during this week’s commissioner’s work session that his takeaways center on “consolidating resources” as well as “the urban interface where our wildland areas meet our populated areas.”

He also highlighted a proposed community risk reduction plan and the need for sustainable funding.

“That’s the crux of the report,” he said.

COG Fire Services Committee chair Paul Pascuzzi highlighted the idea of “looking at the community of Warren County as a whole.

“Trying to address it individually” at the municipal level “has become extremely difficult.”

He said the community risk reduction plan “could help us understand where our risks are and identify abatement of those risks.”

Commissioner Ben Kafferlin asked for a quote on the cost of the plan.

Pascuzzi said the report would be presented over the course of several Council of Governments meetings “to review each of the components” of the plan.

“It sounds like there’s movement afoot,” Commissioner Tricia Durbin said, “people recognizing the need to do something about it.”

The COG Fire Services on Committee also discussed the report, including a potential name change for that group. There was discussion about that group expanding its capacity.

This is the first of two studies the county will participate in with the other focusing on EMS, the more urgent crisis.

Pascuzzi said a consultant has been assigned to that effort.

Starting at $3.50/week.
