Enforcement detail results in spike in citations

The Easter weekend is traditionally a busy one for the Pennsylvania State Police.

Last weekend, “there was a statewide Pennsylvania State Police holiday enforcement,” Sgt. Brian Hamilton said. “Easter is traditionally one of our enforcement weekends that the state gathers statistics.”

The statistics were good locally.

“We only had one crash over the weekend,” Hamilton said. It was not a fatality.

Statewide, there were over 100 injuries and four fatalities over the weekend, according to statistics provided by PSP. “Alcohol was a factor in 10 percent of the crashes, including one fatal crash.”

Locally, officers did issue numerous citations.

A check of the dockets from Warren County’s three magisterial district judges shows 150 separate driving citations from Friday, April 15, through Sunday, April 17.

By comparison, there were 11 total citations April 8 through 10, 30 from April 1 through 3, and 11 in the last weekend in March.

There were 13,490 traffic citations issued statewide last weekend.

Unlike some holidays and events, there was not a particular focus on drunk driving this weekend, Hamilton said. “We’re out enforcing all laws. Across the troop, our troop did pretty well. Our captain was pleased with the enforcement.” Troop E includes all of Erie, Crawford, and Venango counties and most of Warren County. A portion of Mead Township is located in Troop C’s coverage area.

“We just ask that everybody obey the speed limits that are out there,” he said. “Make sure you’re driving vehicles that are inspected and safe to be on the roads.”

He said some drivers let their guards down when the weather starts to warm up for the season. Then, as it did this week, the weather turns wintry again – “that’s when we get more crashes.”

“Continue to be cautious, especially in the colder weather,” Hamilton said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
