Upset tax sale deadlines approaching
Over 250 properties remain subject to an upcoming tax sale and various deadlines are approaching as the sale rolls closer.
Over 500 properties were on the initial sale list. The most recent update from Tax Claim dated Sept. 7 indicates a total of 278 properties that remain potentially exposed to the sale at this time.
“Our last day to accept personal checks to avoid the upset tax sale is the 10th,” Tax Claim Director Phil Gilbert said, and the “last day to register for the upset sale is the 17th.”
The sale is set for Monday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. Properties in the sale are those with unpaid 2019 property taxes. The final deadline to pay is the Friday before the sale at 4 p.m.
Many of the properties once part of the Impact Warren project — the condos along the Allegheny River and the apartments and office space that front Pennsylvania Ave. between Liberty St. and Hickory St. — remain on the list.
A total of 12 parcels under the ownership of The Landing at Warren LP with Breeze Point Circle addresses made the list as well as the 301-303 Pennsylvania Ave. W. 331-333 Pennsylvania Ave. W. and 337-343 Pennsylvania Ave. W. also are included.
All of those properties are owned by entities with addresses out of Turbotville, Pa. As are the West Liberty Apartments at 309 Pennsylvania Ave. W. that brings the highest approximate upset price at $247,141.35.
Changes in state law require a registration process for any prospective bidders.
The registration process has to be completed 10 days prior to the tax sale because a list of registered bidders will be distributed to the county’s municipalities who will have the ability to approve or object specific bidders.
This applies to individuals and businesses and there is a $15 fee as part of the process.
“Registration process has been fine so far,” Gilbert said. “I’m just worried about people coming in the week after, or the day of.”
