Reproductive rights rally set for Saturday
The controversial Texas abortion restriction law is spurring rallies throughout the region this weekend.
One such rally is set for the steps of the Warren County Courthouse on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Similar protests events are in the works in Chautauqua County.
The rally in Warren County is being put on by Invisible Warren PA, a self-styled “progressive activism group.”
They say in a statement that the event — dubbed a Save Our Reproductive Rights Rally — is in “conjunction with a nationwide series of Women’s March gatherings in support of a woman’s right to choose.”
“Women all over the country are infuriated by the recent attempt of Texas to cut women’s reproductive rights down to zero,” Karen Black, Indivisible Warren PA cofounder said.
“We just want to make it clear that we are simply not tolerating such a plan here, or anything like it”.
Several speakers will participate in the event including Shelbie Stromyer, who ran for state senate in the last election cycle; local activist Brianna Powers; former county commissioner Pat Evans and current commissioner Jeff Eggleston.
“I have to speak out,” Stromyer said. “No one has the right to regulate when women have children. No one has the right to jeopardize our health. It’s especially repugnant that such laws end up being written mostly by those no longer in their reproductive years.”
Masks and social distancing is required to participate and attendees are encouraged to bring signs.
