School board votes in favor of final budget
There will be no tax increase for the Warren County School District this year.
The eight board members present at a special meeting Friday afternoon voted unanimously, and without comment, in favor of a zero-tax-increase final budget for the 2021-2022 year.
The district’s real estate tax rate remains at 55.3371 mills. There were no changes to the other taxes on the books — 0.5 percent earned income and net profits; 1 percent real estate transfer; and $5 local services.
The budget reflects expenditures of $86,435,838 — an increase of $802,152 over 2020-2021 — and revenues of $85,633,686.
According to the budget document, the district will serve an estimated 3,895 students in the coming year — down 114 (2.8 percent).
The district had just over $3 million in its undesignated fund balance as of June 30. In the designated fund balance, the district had another $14.6 million with dollars committed to capital improvements ($3.16 million); PSERS ($4.5 million); tax compliance ($1 million); medical ($780,000); textbooks ($1.8 million); technology ($2.6 million); scrap recovery ($216,000); Warren County Career Center health program ($10,000); and STEM ($583,000).
The board could have raised taxes up to the state-assigned index of 4.3 percent — about 2.4 mills.
Over the past few months, the board discussed the options and asked administration to bring forward a final budget with no tax increase.
