Late Season
Helicopters utilized for gypsy moth spraying
The Days Inn parking lot had some unusual vehicles in it earlier this week.
Two helicopters from Tallman Aerial Spraying of Dauphin spent the night there on the backs of trucks. According to John Tallman, his company was hired to do late season gypsy moth spraying on some high-value timber on private land in the area.
The timing isn’t ideal, but the spraying will help mitigate gypsy moth damage and cut down on egg masses, Tallman said. Gypsy moth spraying is typically done earlier in the season. Doing so now will give the trees a jump-start on next year, which Tallman expects to be a bad year for the pests.
The helicopters were in the north-central part of the state for several days. They had finished their local work and had moved on to St. Marys by Wednesday.
Tallman said extensive gypsy moth spraying has been done in Centre, Blair, Clearfield, and Cambria counties.
