Cans For A Cause
Area girl collecting recyclables for STEM camp trip

Lexi Gulnac loves school.
She can’t get enough of it.
In fact, she’s headed to Pittsburgh this summer for a week for some extra work in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Lexi, 10, of Warren, daughter of Brian and Danielle, is heading to LaRoche College for the National Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM. She is finishing up her fourth-grade year at Warren Area Elementary Center. She is also in her fourth year as part of the Warren YMCA Extreme Athletix Cheer and Dance competitive cheer program.
“She loves school,” Brian Gulnac said. “She would go every day of the year if she could.”
The camp is more than just a welcome extension of school for Lexi.
“I’m excited to be able to make new friends and to discover what it’s going to be like when I’m older,” she said.
NYLF Pathways to STEM is part of the Envision family of programs.
“As an alumna of Envision myself, I am excited for Lexi to meet, work, and collaborate with fellow high-aspiring students from other cities and schools,” Envision Senior Vice President Amanda Freitag Thomas said.
Lexi is hoping the camp will help her with some career choices. For now, she hopes to be a pediatrician and help kids, or become a math teacher like her mother.
“It’s going to give me the ability to see which job I want to have,” Lexi said.
To help cover the costs of the camp, Lexi is collecting cans for recycling. She’s a recycler and cans just made sense.
She is off to a good start thanks to a local fraternal and service organization.
The Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 109 of Warren has agreed to save its cans and give them to Lexi.
“The Warren Moose is giving her all our cans for two months,” Treasurer Tom Jackman said.
On Wednesday, Jackman and Moose Administrator Tina Nary presented Lexi with eight full garbage bags full of cans.
They expect to have at least that many more next month. But, the Moose isn’t trying to monopolize Lexi.
“The Moose would like to challenge all other clubs, organizations, and individuals to support Lexi’s efforts,” Jackman said.
She appreciates both the cans and the challenge.
“I’m grateful that the Moose is giving me cans so that I can go to the STEM,” Lexi said. “Them helping me is a great opportunity to get more cans.”
Going to college at age 10 is a big deal and it’s generating some talking points and maybe some competitive spirit in the family.
Lexi, who is the youngest of four siblings, said, “I’m going to be the first to go to college.”
