State funds awarded for watershed improvement

A project in Warren County is one of over 130 state-wide funded through the Department of Community and Economic Development.

The state announced the awards this week. The projects focus on infrastructure, enhancing community development as well as protecting the environment.

A total of 135 projects were funded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority.

“This funding supports projects that will enhance the quality of life for Pennsylvanians in neighborhoods across the state, improving recreational spaces and boosting critical environmental and infrastructural upgrades– reinforcing safety and remediation efforts that can transform community space,” Dennis Davin, secretary of the DCED explained.

Here in Warren County, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy was awarded $60,000 for Brokenstraw Creek watershed improvement project.

The Conservancy has been heavily involved in work on the Brokenstraw Creek in past years, according to a prior annual report where nearly 3,200 feet of streambank were restored aimed at reducing soil loss on the Brokenstraw.

DCED awarded over $15 million state-wide, with about $1.7 million to cover 17 projects aimed at watershed restoration and protection.

Other projects included flood mitigation, greenways/trails and recreation, sewage facilities and well plugging.
