Second body found; Potthoff charged with another murder

The short but deadly saga of of a Corry man’s flight from police ending with his capture added another chapter Friday morning.

Cody J. Potthoff, 25, of Corry, was caught in Warren County on Thursday and charged with murder in Erie County.

His alleged flight from police began Wednesday in Edinboro and spread from there into Columbus and Farmington townships in Warren County.

Along the way, Potthoff is alleged to have stolen five vehicles during his attempts to elude police.

The body of Ian M. Welden, 41, of Corry, was found in the first vehicle.

Potthoff reportedly stole an ATV and a Chevy Silverado before getting into a red truck owned by John C. Burick, 66, of Harborcreek.

According to police, Burick was seen on video driving the vehicle with a “young, white male passenger, suspected to be Potthoff.”

The vehicle was eventually found at a Route 6, Columbus Township residence. State Police, including a Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) surrounded that property Wednesday evening, but Potthoff was not there.

Apparently, Potthoff went to another Columbus Township residence and stole another vehicle.

On Thursday, police were told Potthoff was in a homeless shelter in Warren County and he was captured there.

Burick had not been seen since the video was taken and troopers “began searching possible locations for” him. “The only information available was something about tall grass and possibly in the North East area,” police said in a Friday release.

Police found tire tracks leading from the parking area into the woods at state game lands in the North East area. “A foot search was conducted, and they located the victim deceased in the woods,” according to police.

“With the concurrence of the Erie County DA’s Office, Potthoff will be charged today on murder charges for both victims, as well as numerous related charges including kidnapping, abuse of corpse, fleeing and eluding, multiple burglaries, thefts, etc.,” police said Friday. “The Troop E Major Case Team continues today with numerous interviews to complete the timeline of events. The Pennsylvania State Police appreciates the help from the media and community members with this constantly changing/developing incident.”
