Nutrition-Exercise

Program Offered

In a recent community needs assessment conducted by Kane Community Hospital (KCH), it was determined that the childhood obesity rate in the area KCH serves is higher than the national average.

In response, KCH felt it was important to offer its communities support. That support now takes the form of an integrated nutrition and exercise program for local schools in a flexible format.

The first programs were conducted at Kane Area Elementary School. A series of sessions was held during school, one session a week for six consecutive weeks. A second series followed as a weekly after school program.

The program is conducted by Mariann Kahle, RD, LDN, UPMC Hamot and exercise physiologist Jessica McDivitt, manager of KCH’s Cardiac Rehab and Wellness Center.

The most recent program was presented at Johnsonburg Elementary School as an after-school program. Principal Jenn Hobbs said that the program was popular and that she had “received a ton of positive feedback on the program and would absolutely like to offer it again.”

At each session in the program there is a nutrition lesson followed by a physical activity. All lessons have take home information for the children to share with their parents so the whole family can take advantage of the nutritional facts and fun ways to learn about eating healthy and the importance of exercise.

In May, the team travels to Sheffield Area Elementary School for a full day series of mini programs.

This week, third-grade students read an excerpt of Beverly Cleary’s “Ramona Quimby: Age 8”. In this part of the story, Ramona is given an assignment to present a book report to her class. Ramona wants to be unique in her presentation, and she chooses to present her book in the form of a commercial she watched while she was home sick. She creates cat masks because the book is about a cat, and secretly asks two friends to join her in her presentation. Needless to say, Ramona becomes flustered during her presentation and blurts out a crazy line from a pizza commercial! Not only did the students enjoy Ramona’s silly book report, but they loved making their own cat masks as well.
