The Allegheny National Forest is celebrating National Get Outdoors day June 10 by hosting an outdoor adventure day at Beaver Meadows Recreation Area on the Marienville Ranger District. ANF staff will be available from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. to lead a variety of activities including: kayaking (a limited number of kayaks and canoes will be available); hiking; campfire building; bird watching; outdoor yoga and other activities.
Beaver Meadows Recreation Area is located on Forest Road 282, four miles north of Marienville on North Forest Street. “Beaver Meadows offers a unique kayaking experience, several hiking trails and a great picnic area,” said District Ranger Rob Fallon. “This is a great opportunity for everyone to come out and enjoy their national forest.”
Get Outdoors Day is the third event of five fee waiver days for 2017. On fee waiver days, there is no charge to use most of the Allegheny’s open camping and day use sites. There are some exceptions, however. Fees will not be waived for any of the Willow Bay Cabins or for campsite utilities (electric, water and sewage) at Willow Bay or Red Bridge. In addition, fees will not be waived for reservations made through the National Recreation Reservation Service. The remaining 2017 events are:
June 10: National Get Outdoors Day, a day when federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and the recreation industry encourages healthy, outdoor activities.
Sept. 30: National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort in support of public lands
Nov. 11-12: Veteran’s Day Weekend, commemorates the end of World War I, and pays tribute to all military heroes past and present.

Blood Drive
Lou Fratrich was diagnosed with esophagus cancer October 25, 2016. He had his first surgery February 8, 2017.
He was released from the hospital and returned home to recover from the surgery, however, on March 23, he returned to the hospital because he started to bleed.
The surgeons where able to stop the bleeding but they discovered that his esophagus had healed to his aorta and he ended up bleeding out, needing 91 units of blood to save his life. Lou ended up spending 50 days in the ICU where he had to receive over 225 units of blood total.
Unfortunately, Lou lost his battle with cancer on Monday, May 15, 2017. Lou’s blood type was B positive. If it were not for blood drives, Lou would not have made it as long as he did.
Tidioute Community Charter School will host a Blood Drive on Thursday, June 1, at the Tidioute Firehall from 12:30 to 6 p.m.
This will be the last blood drive of the school year and the blood drive committee would like to make this drive in memory of Mr. Fratrich.
Benefit for Rylan King (corrected date)
The family and friends of five-year-old Rylan King are hosting a benefit spaghetti dinner from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at the Sugar Grove Fire Hall.
Rylan is the daughter of Nick and Naka King of Sugar Grove. She is diagnosed with Duplicate Chromosome 15q. This is a neurodevelopment disorder that affects a child’s development in areas like motor skills, cognitive learning, speech and others. Many are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, epilepsy, and intellectual disability.
Due to Rylan’s cognitive and motor functioning, two-to-three years delayed, she attends the Early Intervention classroom, as well as a typical preschool classroom. In addition, Rylan receives physical therapy, and speech and sensory integration occupational therapy.
Because Dup15q syndrome is a rare disorder, it’s often difficult for families to find doctors in their communities that know about Dup15q syndrome.
“Rylan’s Warriors” are working toward raising money and awareness for this disorder to not only help Rylan but other children affected with Dup15. The Dup15 Alliance is hosting a conference in July and “Ryan’s Warriors” would like to send Rylan and her parents there to meet with the doctors, therapists and to learn about the latest advances, therapies and medications for Dup15. Funds raised at this spaghetti dinner benefit will help to do that.
The host band will be Day Old Soup with sound provided by Skip Lanphere, with special guests Matt Maloof, The Flock, Morganthus and Slow Motion Breakdown.
There will be Chinese and live auctions, raffles, 50/50’s, a bake sale, kids’ activities, and the dinner, which is for a $10 donation for adults, and a $5 donation for kids ages five to 12. Kids under four eat for free.
For more information, or to donate, contact Deb Jackson at (716) 640-1508.
