Book Club

The Sugar Grove Library Book Club meeting that was cancelled last Monday due to frigid temperatures is rescheduled for this Monday, February 3rd at 6:30 p.m. The January’s choice for the Sugar Grove Free Library Book club is selected by Marjean Hawkins is a book by Lenore Skomal called Third Willow. Lenore Skomal is an author from Erie, PA. The library has arranged for Lenore Skomal to be at the Sugar Grove Library to participate in our book club discussion. It is so wonderful to have one of our authors on hand to join us, so all you book club members come on out and join in. It’s not too late. Copies of the book are currently available at the library. Anyone can read the book selection and join us at 6:30 p.m. at the Library. Call the library if you have any questions on participating in the SGFL book club.

Scrabble

The Sugar Grove Free Library will be holding a Scrabble Tournament on Saturday, February 1st from 10 a.m. noon at the Library. Admission for participants will be $10 and proceeds will benefit our local library. Anyone interested in participating can stop in the library for a registration form. Official scrabble rules that are included with every Scrabble Game will be followed There will be four, 30 minute rounds and there will be 2 minute limit per turns. Scores from all rounds will be added together to determine our winners. If you are a lover of Scrabble, then this is a day for you. Come on down to the library and join in the fun.

Community lunches

The Community Lunches in the area continue to be well attended. All lunches begin at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend any or all of the area Community lunches. Each month lunch is held on the 1st Friday of the month at the Mission Covenant Church at the corner of Matthews Run and Jackson Run Road. On the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church located at the corner of Race Street and Jamestown Street in the center of town. On the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church located in Chandlers Valley. Everyone is invited to attend.

WCSD Schedule

Planning ahead there will be no school for any employees for students on Monday, February 17th.

Kindergarten

registration

Tuesday, Feb. 18, will be the day to register for 2014-15 Kindergarten at the Sugar Grove Elementary School. Students will be registering to attend the new K-12 facility at Eisenhower. Registration times are from 8:30-10:45 a.m. or 1:00 2:30 p.m. Please bring to the school office the following items when you come to register: Student’s Birth certificate, Immunization records, proof of residency by means of a utility bill, credit card bill, deed, mortgage, lease agreement, or driver’s license. Each student being registered will have the opportunity to meet Kindergarten teachers and also complete a vision screening.

Registration packets can be obtained at the school office or at the Warren County School District Administration offices. Schools ask that your registration packet be completed prior to arrival on registration day. Everyone should allow at least 1 hour for the registration process. If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 489-7851.

Registration will also be held at the Russell Elementary School on Feb. 11.

District Orchestra

Eisenhower Middle High School recently sent five representatives to the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District Orchestra Festival.

The event was held at Indiana University of Pennsylvania Jan. 22-24. This year’s guest conductor was Jason Worzbyt of IUP. EMHS students who were selected to attend were James Palmer on String Bass, Kayla Kuppertz on Violin, Shelby Willis on Flute, Macy Retterer, on Clarinet, Jessalyn Peterson on Cello. EMHS Orchestra is under the direction of Mark Napolitan.

Book Club

Band Alumni

In February, Warren County will welcome back retired EHS Band Director Harris Lanzel. He retired as Eisenhower High School Band Director in 1999. During his 31 years at Eisenhower, Lanzel’s concert, jazz, and marching bands have consistently earned superior ratings at state contests and festivals.

He has a Bachelor’s degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. Lanzel has served as a clinician, lecturer, and adjudicator for Pennsylvania, New York and Florida conventions and contests. He has been the conductor with the Naples Concert Band and he has also guest conducted in Pennsylvania, New York, New Mexico and Florida. Lanzel is now a Naples resident and has also taught instrumental music at Gulf View Middle School, and has worked with the instrumental music programs at East Naples Middle School, St. Ann School, the Village School and Barron Collier High School.

We are pleased to have him back in our area as the guest conductor of this year’s District Band event in Youngsville. On Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Youngsville Band Director Cindy Scheid will be hosting a surprise reception for Harris Lanzel at Youngsville Elementary Middle School in the Library. All former band students of Harris Lanzel are invited to attend.

Art Show

Sugar Grove resident and artist Dan Clement will be having an art show at the Warren Public Library through Jan. 31. The show will be on the third floor of the library in the Wetmore Gallery. Stop by and view more than 30 of Dan’s paintings.

Thank You AMVETS

Thank you to all those at the AMVETS Post 50 who donated to the support of Paul Tutmaher taking the Polar Bear plunge at Chapman State Park during Winterfest last Saturday, Jan. 18. The water was a cool 33 degrees during the afternoon plunge and the wind chill air temperature was hovering near zero. The AMVETS raised $274 to benefit the local Salvation Army.

Art Show

Blood Drive

The American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive at the Sugar Grove Fire Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 3 to 8:30 p.m. They need additional volunteers to drive participants to the donation site and to assist with registering donors. Volunteers are scheduled to work a few hours at each event a few times per year as available. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact Terrie Ericson at 814-688-4622.

Campaign Totals

The Sugar Grove Community raised a total of $1,784.89 during the holiday season for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. Thank you to the five area churches who provided all the volunteers to ring the bell and also thank you to those who gave to the donations containers placed at Kwik Fill Red Apple.

District Chorus

Eisenhower Middle High School will be represented by Anthony Monde, Sharon Harrington, Michael Spencer, Allan Jackson, Ricky Zortman, and Shelby Willis at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District Chorus event happening this weekend at Oswayo Valley Hugh School. The students will join others throughout the area to form a combined choir and perform a public concert Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1:30 p.m.

Card Class

Sugar Grove Free Library will hold its next monthly Creative Card Class on Monday, Jan. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. We will be creating a Valentine/wedding card and a birthday card. Cost for the class is $8. Save the date to join us for some creative fun – no “experience necessary”.
