Elk Township Historical Society open Saturday

SCANDIA – Elk Township Historical Society will feature a local blacksmith demonstration at its next open house on Saturday, June 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the former Scandia School. Lifelong area resident Ron Johnson has been smithing for more than 25 years in his blacksmith shop on Scandia Road. Working with fire and iron, blacksmiths were the backbone of every community, repairing farm equipment, making tools and fashioning necessary items for the home. The historical society has information on early families in the township, cemetery records, obituaries and 100 years of Scandia School records, barn foundations and relics of early life in rural America. The museum is free and open to the public.
