The annual Johnny Appleseed Festival kicked off Friday in Sheffield with a sizeable turnout for a Friday afternoon.

Opening ceremonies were at 1 p.m. The annual cornhole competition kicked off at 5 p.m. and children’s activities opened then as well.

But the real highlight of the event started at 6 p.m. with the first batch of events in the lumberjack and lumberjill competitions.

Professional competitors from across North America gather each year to compete in seven events.

The event continues through the weekend with more lumberjack and lumberjill events, a wine walk, an apple pie contest, horse and tractor pulls, and a luminary presentation and fireworks Saturday night.
