Compost again available at Betts Park for pickup

Times Observer photo by Brian Ferry Compost is available at Betts Park for pickup by City of Warren residents.

The City of Warren composts yards waste, grass clippings, and other organic materials collected within the city.

The city then gives that compost away to individual city residents.

“The stuff we did bring down there went in two days,” Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke said.

After that fast start, the weather caused an interruption and some concern on the part of residents.

“It was so wet, we had to stop making it,” Reinke said. “It got too wet to screen.”

Residents who went to Betts Park to collect some compost two days after the initial batch was delivered were disappointed.

That problem has been corrected. There is more compost at the park and there will continue to be deliveries until the new material runs out.

“Sorry for the gap,” Reinke said. “There’s more down there. There’s more coming.”

“If we get too much rain, the compost will clump up in the screener,” Reinke said.

When the compost clumps, good mulch is sent to the oversize pile that is the start of next year’s mulch.

“As long as the weather stays dry, we’ll keep the pile restocked from now on until it’s gone,” Reinke said.
